Portable blenders: are they worth it?
What a USB-rechargeable blender can and can’t do, and how to get smooth results every time.
A portable blender is a small cup with blades in the base and a rechargeable battery. You blend, then drink from the same cup.
What they're great at
- Protein shakes and smoothies with soft fruit
- Baby food and sauces in small batches
- Frozen fruit, if you add enough liquid
What they're not for
- Ice on its own
- Hard nuts or nut butters
- Large family portions
Tips for smooth results
- Add liquid first, then soft ingredients, then frozen pieces.
- Fill no more than two-thirds.
- Blend in short pulses of 20–30 seconds.
What to look for
- Battery: check how it charges and how many blends the maker says you get per charge.
- Cup size: pick a size that matches the portions you usually make.
- Cleaning: a cup that rinses out easily saves time.
- Safety: look for a lid or base lock that stops the blades running when the cup isn't attached.
